It’s party time: bioplastics MAGAZINE celebrates tenth anniversary!

Finding the right booth at K 2016 was, for once, simple: the sound of the sax, signaling the location of the party, was immediately audible at the entrance to the hall. The crowd holding glasses of dark beer or champagne did the rest.

At the booth in Hall 7a / booth B10, which is shared by European Bioplastics and bioplastics MAGAZINE, the tenth birthday of the magazine – the sole trade journal focussed exclusively on bioplastics – was being celebrated by guests from across the globe.

The magazine was born in 2006 from the brain of its owner, publisher and chief editor, Michael Thielen. He started hearing about bioplastics in a serious way in 2005,discoveredthere was no magazine serving the bioplastics industry and decided to start one. That was back in 2006. And today, ten years later bioplastics MAGAZINE has become the acknowledged go to resource for anybody wanting to learn more about bioplastics, their role in the plastics industry, and their potential to help shape and promote the transition to the bio-economy.

Some things have changed over the past ten years. The magazine has broadened its scope to include such topics as biobased platform chemicals – the building blocks for biochemicals – and plastics derived from methane and CO2 feedstock, which, strictly speaking, are not bioplastics. Events have been added, such as the successful and well-attended Bioplastics Business Breakfasts that took place here at the K exhibition.

partyThe daily online news was added a few years ago, and a digital newsletter. These are all changes that that have served to enhance the coverage provided by the magazine to its readers. Yet the original premise has remained unchanged: to provide reliable, well-researched information and a well-balanced view of the opportunities- as well as the pitfalls – of bioplastics, and most importantly: to establish a true bioplastics community.

So, cheers! Here’s to the next 10 years!
